Scope and Content

Color Photograph 811 East 6th Street Benicia CA Parcel Number: 89-072-10 According to survey paperwork: a common name is "Gonzalves House" but the historic name is "Doran-Butler-Strong House This 1933 stucco bungalow with basement incorporates a very early Benicia dwelling. The gable roof extending over the entire front creating a narrow porch which has four decorative arches. On either side of the centered main entrance are identical wooden double hung sash windows with small panes outlining the upper sash. The interior of this nearly square house is all original lath and plaster with the exception of the kitchen entry which has some sheet rock. The 1930's had handsome light fixtures and remain. The exterior low stucco over cement fence across the front is intact with a diamond shape decoration repeating the small ceramic tile motif at the gable and at the corners of the porch. This stucco bungalow incorporated a circa 1850's home overlooking the Pacific Mail Steamship Depot. It took its present architectural form in 1933 when Joseph and Rose Gonzalves renovated the old house. Joseph worked for 53 years at the old Pacific Mail site first for Baker & Hamilton Iron Works and then for Yuba Mfg. Co. Rose was born in Benicia. Joseph was born in Portugal and arrived in Benicia in 1919. This house from an historical viewpoint represents where and how people lived who were connected with the early Portuguese contributors to Benicia.
