Scope and Content

Color Photograph 131 West D Street Benicia CA Parcel Number: 89-244-4 The house was moved from 221 First Street to the West D site in 1988 (the parcel number may have changed) Italianate with Simple Greek Revival Style The roof design on this one story rectangular wood frame house with raised basement suggests that the front and rear sections could have been constructed at different times; the rear is truncated hip and the front is horizontal shiplap. The side windows are two over two double hung wood frame and front windows double hung one over one with semi-elliptical shaped panes at the top. The eaves are projecting with a wide frieze. The L shaped front porch has been enclosed. On Insurance maps 1886 and 1899 the configuration is the same but with rear as 1 story and front as 1-1/2 story with a porch across the front. Local tradition says that it was built by Thomas O'Donnell, a carpenter active in tthe 1890's to about 1920. It is possible that O'Donnell remodeled the house around 1900 adding the L shaped porch which unites the Italianate section with the simple Greek Revival broken pediment roof design of the front.
