This New England Shingle style house was owned by three generations of the Hanson Family. The historic name is the Charles Hansen House - built circa late 1800's, at some point in the early 1900's it was rebuilt and enlarged.
The American Shingle style evolved out of the Queen Anne Shingle style. It is more compact and tamer than its flamboyant Queen Anne predecessor. This Shingle style bulding combines what would come to be known as a "bungalow" style porch with a melange of Craftsman style windows, and stick style gable trimmings.
The house recently is called the Hansen-Brock House
The New England Shingle style house was owned by three generations of the Hansen family. Hans Carl Hansen was born in Norway. As a young man, he went to sea and came to the Bay Area. Hans married Bredina Matilda Johansen in Norway on May 12, 1886, where daughter Ragna was born. Carl purchased the property on September 13, 1889, and the family came to live there. Four more children were born in Benicia. In the early 1900's the original house was rebuilt and enlarged into the current 4-bedroom home. The original basement is still under the house. In 1940 Carl went to live with his daughters in Walnut Creek and the oldest son, Herbert C., took over the house. When the Benicia State Park was created, Rita White Mini moved from Dillon Point and rented this house until 1990. Herbert E. Hansen, the third generation, sold the house to Gail and Randy Brock in 1991.
