Scope and Content

Color Photograph 700 First Street Benicia CA Parcel Number: 89-341-24 Historic Name: Hoffman's Drug Store Later Name: O'Grady's Drug Store Later Name: Country Florist and Collectibles Later Name: Studio 41 1986 Research: The drug store/apartment was constructed circa 1913 and the Majestic Theater next door in 1907. In 1920 the theater was the first and only silent film house in Bencia, so the drug store which may have had a soda fountain was in a very good location. Because of extensive remodeling of the facade in the early 1980's the building is not a potential contributor to the Historic District. W.L. Crooks, a long time Benicia Mayor, owned this property and the motion picture theater in 1919. The Bank of Benicia Building located on the S.E. corner of First and G Streets was associated with the Crooks family. The Crooks family plot is located in the historic Benicia City Cemetery
