Description

Purse beaded of white man's beads by local Indian woman in 1890's. Given to Mrs Mary Ryan Massele, born in Benicia in 1855. Metal frame and hanging beads were added later. Donated by "Esther Massle Sparks" on label. Black velvet pouch with flap on each side top gold painted metal clasp with chain handle. Blue cloth lining with small coin purse of leather with metal clasp attached inside by fine metal chain. Beading is of flower buds and leaves. Buds on flaps have bands of color. Leaves/flowers on body are outlined in dark colored beads and infilled with lighter edged all around and orange and green and white braid edges the body with loops of beaded fringe attached. The fringe is of alternating clear beads and irridecent red blue and yellow beads - all have black faceted bead at end of loop of red beads.
