A receipt from Matt Clarken to W. B. Bradford for receipt of $50. The payment was for Mr. Clarken's defense of Mr. Bradford in a case of the People vs John D Johnson in the Justice Court of Benicia Township, Solano County. The receipt is dated Oct. 9, 1883.
Matthew Clarken was born in South Carolina 01/1843 and died in Benicia in 1912. He was a notary public and on the rolls of the State Roster at least in 1899. He married Edith Alice Barry (1874) and they had four children (Alice 1884, Miriam 1886, George 1888, and Edith 1891). His brother, R.M. Clarken was a judge in Sacramento, CA.
William B. Bradford was born in Indianna on 02/10/1826. He arrived in California 03/09/1850 at San Francisco. On 03/04/1872 he married Jennie Smith. She died 11/23/1901 and he married a second time to Amanda Moore. Mr Bradford and his brother were partners in several businesses in San Francisco. In 1874 he settled on a vineyard in Bruceville.Collection
