Cavalry Saber used in the 1860's
manufactured by Schnitzler & Kirschbaum in Solingen, Prussia in the 1840's
Straight wooden handle is covered with leather and a wire grip; brass hilt has three branches, brass pommel cap and guard; curved steel blade, which has ridges on both sides, is flat on the side opposite sharpened edge;
markings on blade: one side: "S & K" (maker), other side: "Solingen" (place);
blade size: 35" long x 1-1/4" wide, overall length: 40-1/2"
This weapon is sometimes called the "wristbreaker" because it was a relatively heavy cavalry saber made before the civil war battles.
