Covers "disputes" between the native inhabitants and iners and settlers wh swrmed over their lands. "Root Diggers" was an epithet used by early pioneers to describe California Indians and they were in truth a simple people living close to the earth. They did not buid spectacular dwellings nor did they have elaborte trditions or ceremonies. Those who came to know the California Indians came to appreciate their honest, their culture and their reverence for the land. paper back 6" x 9" x 3/4" Beige and brown front cover with a photo of an Indian group (possibly Miwoks) and a white boy taken in Sonora; the back cover has paragraphs about the subject with a B/W photo of a mendocino Indian Village circa 1860.
