Context

The authors were English professors and writers that specialized in American literature. In Volume II, the authors discuss the emergence of the printing press on the frontier in the mid to late 1800s and the change of literary patterns after 1870 when the vast increase in the number of immigrants arrived in the United States; comprised of writers who were conscious of the social and economic issues of that time period.
