This device was used to create the illusion of depth in an image by displaying two photos side by side captured from slightly different perspectives.

Context

Appearances by presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson are among other events of the 20th century captured on stereo cards. This stereo-scope model was designed by Oliver Wendell Holmes in 1861.
