Context

Ray Allen Billington was an American historian who researched the history of the American frontier and the American West, becoming one of the leading defenders of Frederick Jackson Turner's "Frontier Thesis" from the 1950s to the 1970s. In "Words That Won the West, Billington explains how effective public relations experts were in the 1840s, just as much in modern times. Billington went on to state that public relations campaigns built on wealth, health, humanitarianism, and patriotism, ideas fundamental to the American way of life, could not fail.
