Photo of Cleo Dawson Smith by Maurice of Chicago Cleo Dawson Smith earned fame as author of "She Came to the Valley." The internationally-successful novel fictionalized the experiences of Dawon's mother, Helen, who was a pioneer in Mission, Texas, in the lower Rio Grande Valley. The book later became the basis for a movie. Cleo Dawson, who often went by her maiden name, was also widely recognized as a psychologist on the lecture circuit and television talk shows.
