Correspondence from the 1950s when Lucile Hendricks served on the State Democratic Executive Committee. Ms. Hendricks wore many different hats over the course of her life. She learned the building trade from her husband and took over the reigns of his construction company after his death in 1964. She was one of the first women building contractors. She ran and was the first female elected to any office in Hidalgo County, becoming the first woman member of the McAllen Independent School Board, serving for many years and ultimately becoming President of the Board. She served many years on the Planning and Zoning Commission, The Board of Adjustment and Appeals, and The McAllen Housing Authority. She was a member of DAR, Zonta International, Republican Women, and a founder of the McAllen Citizen's League. She was a life member of PTA and the first person selected McAllen Chamber of Commerce "Woman of the Year".
Lucile was a member of the State of Texas Democratic Executive Committee during the 1950s until then Senator Lyndon Johnson had her removed. She was always proud of that event as it lead to her active involvement in the Republican Party of Hidalgo County, and was later honored as Hidalgo County Republican of the Decade.Collection
