Documents pertaining to the life of Margaret McAllen. Margaret Huffaker McAllen served as historic preservationist, museum founder, and appointed or elected official of numerous non-profits organizations in South Texas and statewide. She is officially recognized as the founder of the Hidalgo County Historical Museum, which became the Museum of South Texas History. An accomplished historian, she authored, co-authored, or sponsored several books about the region, including the extensive history "I'd Rather Sleep in Texas." Among her numerous awards were the President's Award from the Texas Association of Museums, and recognition as Woman of the Year in Edinburg, Texas. The Margaret H. McAllen Archives at the Museum of South Texas History is named after her.
