Description

Medal of Honor awarded to U.S. Marine Alfredo "Freddy" Gonzalez for conspicuous gallantry in Vietnam, 1968. Award is actually an assemblage of objects, consisting of: (a) Brass nameplate, "Sergeant / Alfredo Gonzalez / United States Marine Corps" (b) Gold-tone U.S. Marine insignia of globe, eagle, and anchor (c) Medal of Honor medallion suspended from a neck ribbon of light blue silk with white stars, displayed on Gonzalez uniform. The medallion is the U.S. Navy version, also awarded to members of the Marine Corps, with a five-pointed star with a figure of Minerva and the U.S. shield at center, suspended from the flukes of an anchor. (d) Medal of Honor service ribbon, metal covered with blue ribbon with white stars, displayed on Gonzalez uniform (e) U.S. Marine Corps Military Ribbons (e) Small hexagonal lapel button with gathered insert of blue ribbon with white stars Related citation, signed by President Richard Nixon, is dated October 31, 1969.
