Wesley Clark, an artist from Washington, DC, created this work by merging vintage aesthetics with contemporary materials to imagine the future of Palestine and the fate of its people. Constructed from plywood, paint, and industrial metals, this work depicts a map of historic Palestine overlaid with the colors of the Palestinian flag. The red triangle intersects the Gaza Strip, where rusted nails draw attention to the violence inflicted upon its people and the lasting scars of the Israeli military occupation. The work has become even more poignant in the years since October 7, 2023, amid the genocidal violence that continues today. Clark explains, "I invent the object's life and history. The materials are selected as a means to tell the story... material clues support a fictitious narrative prompting the viewer to work through their own invented narrative." By blurring the boundaries between history and invention, Clark invites viewers to question how history is constructed, interpreted, and preserved. If an object can be invented and interpreted, the artist asks us: what else can be? And how can we intervene before it is too late?Artwork Details
