The "Tarboosh" is a burgundy colored brimless hat made from felt. This hat was traditionally worn by men. Traditional Palestinian male costume typically included of long pants, a tunic, and an overgarment often worn with a belt. Sometimes a waistcoat might be included. On the head was placed a skullcap over which were worn a tarboosh. Both men and women covered their heads to be both respectful and modest, as well as serve as protection from the sun. This headdress gained popularity throughout the rule of the Ottoman Empire (1517-1917) and was worn by men of all ethnicities and religions under their rule. The popularity of the Tarboosh began to wane following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire after World War I.Collection
