On ViewDescription
Wall hanging composed of embroidered fragments from traditional Palestinian dresses, featuring hand cross-stitch and couching stitch, as well as machine-embroidered cross-stitch, satin stitch, and couching stitch. The fragments primarily feature floral and other curvilinear motifs characteristic of the six-branch dress, a non-regional style that emerged in the mid-twentieth century and is distinguished by the six vertical embroidered bands, or branches, extending from the waist to the hem.
These dresses incorporated motifs that were not specific to individual villages, reflecting changes in Palestinian dress and embroidery following 1948. The fragments presented here do not represent village-specific dress traditions of pre-1948 Palestine, but document the range of hand and machine embroidery techniques used in Palestinian dressmaking from the 1980s through the 2000s.Collection

Notes
The donor purchased this wall hanging from Bawab Al-Tashark in Amman, Jordan on Rainbow Street, from a man named Majdi Al Qutbi from Nasra, Palestine. The donor saw it in 2023, and purchased it in 2024. The wall hanging has a sister, that is similar but different, that the donor gifted to the Tatreez Institute collection.
