Place Name
al-Ghabisiyya (الغابسية)Place Description
A historic Palestinian village on a rocky hill rising from the Acre plain, in the foothills of the western Galilee and just south of the road connecting Tarshiha, Nahariyya, and Acre. The area has evidence of much earlier settlement, including caves used as burial places, while the village itself had an Ottoman-era school, stone and reinforced-concrete houses, and a predominantly agricultural economy; grain and vegetables were the chief crops, and olives were processed in two animal-drawn presses. In 1944/45, the lands of al-Ghabisiyya, Shaykh Dannun, and Shaykh Dawud included 6,633 dunums devoted to cereals and 1,371 dunums to irrigated or orchard land, with 300 dunums in al-Ghabisiyya itself planted with olives. Also Known As
