Gaza Region (غَزَّة)

Place Name

Gaza Region (غَزَّة)

Place Description

The historic Gaza region of Palestine encompassed a broad territory along the southern Mediterranean coast and across the southern coastal plain, extending considerably beyond the boundaries of the modern, occupied Gaza Strip and encompassing Palestinian towns, villages, agricultural lands, and Bedouin tribal territories. Its native agricultural landscape was characterized by extensive cereal cultivation, citrus and banana groves, irrigated fields and orchards, olive groves, gardens, and grazing lands, while the coastal environment also supported prickly-pear cactus, which was used in places as a hedge against shifting sand; settled farming existed alongside pastoral and semi-pastoral livelihoods among Bedouin populations.
