al-Khalil Region (الخليل)

Place Description

The al-Khalil region encompasses the mountainous southern highlands surrounding the city of al-Khalil, with limestone ridges, valleys, agricultural terraces, and rural villages extending across the southern central highlands of Palestine. Olives, grapes, figs, almonds, and cereals have long been important agricultural products, while the region was also renowned for handcraft traditions for centuries, including glassmaking, leather tanning, ceramics, and textile production, particularly the densely embroidered women's dresses characterized by intricate, closely worked cross-stitch and silk appliqué. By 1948, al-Khalil region was comprised of 83 Arab towns and villages, each had their own distinct embroidered dress style.
