Place Name
Haifa Region (حيفا)Place Description
The historic Haifa region of Palestine extended along the Mediterranean coast and encompassed Mount Carmel, Haifa Bay, the Kishon plain, and the agricultural lands stretching south and east toward Marj Ibn Amir. Haifa developed from a small coastal settlement into an important commercial and maritime center, with its position on the Mediterranean and at the foot of Mount Carmel connecting the city to the interior of Palestine and the wider eastern Mediterranean. During the late Ottoman period, Haifa's maritime trade expanded, and under the British Mandate the construction of a modern port, railway connections, and industrial infrastructure transformed the city into one of the principal economic centers of Palestine. The surrounding region retained a substantial agricultural economy, with grain cultivation, olives, vegetables, orchards, and irrigated land, supported by springs, wells, and the fertile coastal and foothill landscapes; in al-Tira alone, 16,219 dunums were devoted to cereals and 3,543 dunums to plantation and irrigable land in 1944/45, while Ijzim devoted 17,791 dunums to cereals and 2,367 dunums to irrigated land and orchards. Also Known As
