Galilee Region, Lower (الجليل)

Place Name

Galilee Region, Lower (الجليل)

Place Description

The historic Lower Galilee region of Palestine encompassed the lower hills, valleys, and fertile plains south of Upper Galilee, extending toward the Jezreel Valley to the south, the Sea of Galilee and Jordan Valley to the east, and the coastal plain to the west. Its geology is varied, with limestone predominating across the central Lower Galilee, Terra Rossa soils occurring extensively across the limestone hills, and basalt formations characterizing parts of the eastern region near the Golan Heights; these geological conditions contributed to the region's varied vegetation and agricultural potential. The region's agricultural landscape included extensive cereal cultivation as well as olive groves, plantation land, and irrigated fields, with cultivation varying according to terrain and access to water. At Saffuriyya, an important settlement and agricultural center at the gateway to Lower Galilee, 21,841 dunums were devoted to cereals and 5,310 dunums to plantation and irrigable land in 1944/45; in Kafr Sabt, in the eastern Lower Galilee, 9,368 dunums were devoted to cereals and only 7 dunums to plantation and irrigable land, demonstrating the predominance of grain cultivation in parts of the region.
