"Unknown" refers to an object whose place of manufacture, assembly, creation, or origin has not been successfully established through the documentation or research available to the museum. The designation “unknown” refers only to the place itself. Other information about the object's cultural identity, historical context, date, material, or provenance may still be known and is provided in the description written for the object's record.
The designation “unknown” creates a field within the archival record where information can be added if new documentation or research becomes available. Creating a field for what should be known has epistemological significance, as well, prompting the reader to explore possible places even further. "Unknown" fields are not omitted, they are noted in the hope that the community and future generations can fill in the gaps of knowledge. As with many Palestinian historical artworks and objects that have travelled to the United States, an object may have passed through the hands of tourists or collectors before entering a museum collection, resulting in the loss of information about its original context and provenance.
