The historic Jerusalem region of Palestine encompassed the city and a broad surrounding area of the central Palestinian highlands, extending across a rugged landscape of limestone ridges, deep valleys, terraced slopes, and upland plateaus; authority over Jerusalem shifted from Ottoman rule to the British Mandate (1917–1948), followed by the division of the city between Jordanian-administered East Jerusalem and Israeli-controlled West Jerusalem after 1948, and Israel’s occupation and annexation of East Jerusalem in 1967, which remains illegal under international law. Its agricultural landscape was characterized by olive groves, vineyards, fruit orchards, cereals, vegetables, and legumes, with extensive stone terraces enabling cultivation on the mountainous slopes and springs and cisterns providing water in an environment where agriculture depended heavily on winter rainfall.Also Known As
