Scope and Content

By the end of the 1920s, British fiscal policy in Palestine reflected the ongoing concern by the Treasury in London to have colonies operate a balanced budget and ensure they did not become a burden to the United Kingdom. The 1929 Palestine riots (Arabic: ثورة البراق, Thawrat al-Buraq), was a series of demonstrations and riots in August 1929 that escalated over access to the Western Wall in Jerusalem. These events caused more British involvement in the economy, as well as an increased defense expenditure, creating a deficit in the United Kingdom’s budget. The British then increased local revenue (i.e. taxes) to balance the budget and ultimately assert more control over the land. Village: Beit Jala?
