This is a newspaper clipping kept by donor Marcia Stone during her time living and working in southern Lebanon in 1982-1984 supporting the released prisoners of Ansar prison. The clipping features a single-panel cartoon of two fish circling inside a fishbowl, accompanied by the caption, “Let’s go around one more time and then call it a day.” Stone annotated the clipping in red ink with the words “LIFE IN SOUTH LEBANON (& WORK) 1984,” suggesting she saw in the cartoon a metaphor for the circular, exhausting routine of humanitarian work in a region under occupation. It could also reflect the sentiments of those that she worked with and served, Palestinians imprisoned by the Israeli occupation forces in Ansar prison.
The cartoon’s original publication is unknown; no identifying text appears on the clipping itself, and the artist’s signature is only partially legible. The drawing style, caption structure, and signature strongly indicate it is a Norman Rothschild cartoon who was a prolific American gag-panel cartoonist. His work appeared in newspapers and magazines from the 1950s through the 1980s, often featured in The New Yorker, or a syndicated newspaper humor page, such as “Daily Chuckle” or “Panel Gags.”
Preserved among the materials Stone later donated to the Museum of the Palestinian People, the clipping reflects the private humor and coping strategies she carried with her during her service on the edge of Ain al-Hilweh Camp.Collection
