Wilson, Bertha Mallen. Back row: unknown, possibly Roy Mallen and unknown Briggs. Letter attached written by Virginia Perry Wilson. Letter states: "Atlas Peak School about 1911-1912. School house was red--12 seats-Long bench up in front-Pot bellied [?] cast iron stove. Black board on front wall back of teacher's desk-water in a bucket was obtained each day from Harris ranch across the road-There was an out door toilet-one seaster [?]-no play things-bats, balls, etc, our best game was "black man's base", bases being boulders-We also played tag, + had a rock fort on the hill above the school house, For part of the time I was the only girl. We walked too from the school with our teachers, dust in summer, mud in winter-My home was over a mile away-Later, when we were old enough we drove a horse and buggy to school or rode horseback-The teacher lived at our home-My father was a school trustee. The school had a dictionary, set of encylopedias, and good selection of books, including Theordore Roosevelt's "African Game Trails". We worked hard, we played hard. Our teacher, Elizabeth Herron of Brown's Valley, was a graduate of Oberlin College, still an excellent college- In this picture -teacher, Elizabeth Herron. Front row-left to right- can't remember first boy, then Everadus Wilson, Virginia Wilson, Bertha Mallen, I can't place her brother, Roy Mallen, perhaps behind her-There was a Briggs boy, I can't remember the others. The school burned about 194045. There was another one room school, Columbus School, about 6 miles nearer Napa. Virginia Perry Wilson, December 12, 1985"
