Photograph of students at Franklin Primary School, often called South Primary School. Affixed to the back is a letter written by Rita Harren Birdwell, a student in the photograph. She is pointed out on the photograph by a note in blue ink. Mounted on cardboard. Back of photograph states: "This is the Franklin School, near the Women's Club on Franklin Street. All the pupils that lived south and west Napa, attended it through the third grade, then they went to the Napa Central School. L to R Teachers: Miss Elizabeth Norris, second grade, Miss Harriet Sift, first grade and Miss Hilda Fleming, third grade. The boy by Elizabeth Norris, is Frank McCarthy, later Father Francis McCarthy, at one time was a priest at St. Joan of Arc Church, Yountville, he later transferred to San Francisco. His sister Agnes McCarthy is eleventh in second row, is a sister at the Dominican COllege in San Rafael. I think both are alive. The boy with paid tie with cap in second row, 16th was James McManus, later a dentist, now deceased (Bill McManus' brother). In the third row was me/ Rita, my first grade. Some are living, some dead, most all married. None committed murder or went to jail. The second girl on the left of me is Nellie Bohen____ Paul Bahenigh N. T. D. [?] sister. 'Backward! Oh! Backward! Oh! Time in your flight' 'Make me a child again, just for tonight.' Rita Harren Birdwell".
