Description

"This is a detailed, readable history of the Golden State, from its discovery up to 1900. the turn of the century marked the end of definite era in California's development. Prior to that time she had been in turn a distant and little-visited outpost of Spain's Mexican colony; the site of a string of isolated missions and presidios, a moneyless land of cattle barons who counted their holdings in square leagues and their wealthy in hundreds of cattle; the scene of desultory fighting between Mexican and American forces in the latter 1840's; the rough, colorful setting of the greatest gold rush in our history; and something little short of the private province of Collis P. Huntington's Central Pacific Railroad. What she became afterwards is not in the province of this volume to tell, but always she has been a land to stir the imagination. This first half of her history, set forth with fine scholarship, just proportion, and lucid style, is of the greatest interest and importance to any Californian--or any other American, for that matter."
