Description

Black and white photograph of Grand Marshall N.W. Collins, July 4, 1911. He is sitting on his horse. Back of photo is captioned: "This is the picture of the greatest politician and lover of all times, the late Nelson Collins ("Nel"). He was County Clerk, a position he held for many years, until his health broke. He was a lrg mason, Knight Templar, and Odd Fellow. He electioned from the day he went into office all during the term. He kissed all the babies and the old ladies, the rest of the women he shook hands, was very courteous and pleasant. I am not sure if "Nel" was born in Calistoga, but the "Cables' were in his family. He was married to Miss Elizabeth White, a teacher in Calistoga. He had one son, Wallace, the last I heard was in Hollywood connected with the movies. The late Dottie Wright, a former Napa County Recorder was his adopted sister. He was very popular, liked by both men and women. He was about as tall as Chief Stone, but heavy like Vernon Van Sant. He had dark hair and eyes, resembled Fred Levy. He lost his money in the "market crash." When his health broke, resigned from his position as County Clerk. The Napa Masons of which he belonged sent him to Union City to the Masonic Home, which is close to Livermore where he resided until his death, and I believe he is buried down there. This picture was taken on Calistoga Ave. close to the Dr. Kettle's home near the Calistoga Ave. Bridge on Jefferson St. The picture taken of "Nel" was when he was Grand Marshal and his officers for Fourth of July Parade. This picture was taken by the Calistoga Ave Bridge. --Rita Harren Bordwell." Related to photo 1985.2.2
