Description

Photo of charcoal portrait of John Orange Taplin Sr. and his son Wm. Hunt Taplin. Paper attached to the photo states: "...Rather than wait till I had more photographs, I enclose a copy of a charcoal portrait I have in my home, of John Orange Taplin, Sr., and of his son, Wm. Hunt Taplin (my grandfather), who operated the Taplin Brothers Dairy on Silverado Trail out of St. Helena. Danial Otis Taplin and John Orange Taplink, brothers of Wm. Hunt Taplin, were partners also in the dairy after their father died and they were old enough to take over. Their father came to California by ox-team in 1849 to San Francisco where he operated a dairy in the Mission district. Their mother Louisa Benjamin Hunt, came from Concord, Mass. (where her ancestor's were founding fathers, fought in the Revolution, took care of the wounded...house is still standing not too far from Concord Bridge...I have picture of it, and have seen it). She had attended Concord Academy, where her older brother was a classmate perhaps of Louisa Mae Alcott. Louisa B. Hunt came arount the Horn to teach school in the "first school on the Hill" and was courted by one of the Ray Brothers of Ray station in Marin county, as well as by John Taplin. John took up land on Silverado Trail in the 1860's...see bio. in several histories of Napa County. The dates differ a bit. The brother of Louisa Benjamin Hunt, Daniel Hunt, was President of Carver Bank, a lumberman, etc. His biography is also in "History of Napa and Lake County," Slocum and Bower. I have a tin-type of Daniel, and portraits of the above Taplins. Also genealogies that I have done. My sister Beth and visited E. Corinth, Vt. for the Bicentennial and met the Taplin family--75% above ground, 75% below ground are Taplins. I have pictures of some of the old homes dating from the 1780-s. John's ancestor was Col. John Taplin, original proprieter of most of Orange and Washington counties, Vermont, founder of Corinth, Newbury, and Montpelier (the capital). John's brother, Warren, was a Methodist minister, who came out early also, and died out here." Filed with the Cole Family photographs, perhaps because Clara Louise Taplin married William Enoch Cole.
