Description

About 1955 at time of purchase Although these two volumes of the Kaiser Steel Fabricating Pant scrapbooks dwell mainly on fabricated structures, i.e., pressure vessels, barges, offshore platforms, kilns, ball mills etc., the main product was steel pipe: American Petroleum Institute specified pipe for nations oil and natural gas transmission industry. Ten million tons of finished pipe was produced altogether by Basalt, Kaiser and Napa Pipe. I don't know what the average price per ton would have been over that period, however, for example, had it been $600 per ton the total dollars involved would have been $6,000,000,000 (6 billion). Pipe manufacturing paid most of the plane overhead, and allowed the fabricating side of the facility to have access to an engineering technical services force it would not have otherwise had with a stand alone fabricating plant. From the steel manufacturing arm of the company, the consumption created one of the most profitable operations Kaiser Steel had. Admittedly the fabricating part of the business was the most interesting, and required the most attention. The plant was the finest fabricating facility in the western United States. What a shame it is all gone, along with its well paying job opportunities.
