The "Little Trancas" stone masonry bridge, located at the intersection of Trancas Street and State Highway 121, served as the original fording spot used bt the Spanish settlers for reaching the ranchos to the east. The bridge, designed by O.H. Buckman, and built in 1908 by H.W. Wing, consists of five arches of local stone. To of the arches span 40 feet, while the remaing three span 20 feet. The stones were hand-dressed and set, after which the arches were fillled with earth. The construction specifications of the day stated, "The fill shall be well-packed by tamping or tramping with horses as it is being put in." By the early 1900's, Napa County had nearllly 70 stone masonry bridges, and was known as California's "Stone Bridge County." [Lombard Creek]Collection
