One of 12 binders from Brad Kirkpatrick relating to Pope Valley history.
Following a booklet with photographs that illustrate the value of the land in the Berryessa Valley, there are some images and newspaper clippings regarding the construction of the Monticello Dam.
From the booklet: "Berryessa Valley: This booklet has been prepared by the residents of the Berryessa Valley, the people that make their living and have made their homes on this fertile land.
The purpose of this booklet is to give the United States Senators and Congressmen a graphic picture of the fertility of the land, the value of the improvements and a conception of the loss in agricultural production that will be attendant with the construction of the Monticello Dam.
To Sum it up . . .
The residents of Berryessa Valley do not object to the development and the complete utilization of the water resources of the Putah Creek water shed in accordance with the recommendation of the State Engineers. But they feel that the fertile land and the valuable improvements in Berryessa Valley should not be destroyed.
1. The Bureau of Reclamation has no basis for being in this project. There is no flood control, and there is no navigation involved. We feel the Bureau has no right to develop water for municipal purposes.
2. There are available to the municipalities and military establishments three separate sources of water any one of which can be cured within a very short period of time; therefore, it cannot be justly claimed that there is any present emergency. Furthermore, the State Engineer pointed out in 1931 that the Solano area would be deficient in water and recommended Lindsey Slough as a potential source of water supply. Only at this late date has both the City of Vallejo and the public utility now supplying Benicia filed applications with the Division of Water Resources for the appropriation of water from this source.
3. In accordance with the recommendation of the State Engineer the people of Berryessa Valley endorse the plan of a reservoir with a capacity of about 500,000 acre-feet at the Snell site on Putah Creek to be incorporated in the plan for the development and utilization of the water resources of Putah Creek. If ultimately required, a 100,000 acre-feet, or in a reservoir at the Guenoc site on the upper reaches of Putah Creek can be secured. This storage would be operated in conjunction with underground storage in the amount of 500,000 acre-feet or more."Collection
