2026.7.1Description
A black and white photograph of students in a classroom at an unidentified school (possibly Main Street School). The chalkboard at the back of the classroom has the lyrics to "I heard the bells on Christmas Day," and a drawing of Santa Claus's sleigh, under a portrait of Abraham Lincoln and a clock. The corner chalkboard is mostly illegible but appears to be a poem by Walt Whittier with arithmetic calculations. Possibly a print of "The Gleaners" by Jean-Francois Millet, and a large floral arrangement or plant on a table. The chalkboard behind the teacher has a drawing of a ship, Plymouth Rock, and the sentence "The Puritans came to America in the Mayflower." Dictation at the top of the board is nearly illegible but seems to be a song with do-re-mi notation. At the right of the front chalkboard is "Monday, Dec. [illegible]. It is raining." There is one African-American female student in the photograph at the left of the frame.Collection
