Description

Black and white photo of a group of men taken outside in front of a restaurant This picture was taken at a reunion of the Napa Hook and Ladder volunteer fire department on May, 1918. A long note included with the photo, written by Rita Harren Bordell the daughter of firefighter Charsles Harren, gives a brief history of the Fire Department. It also identified those pictured as (top row) Morrison Haas, Martin Willteinger, Will Payne, (second row) Max Shwarz, Frank Pond, Charles Maswell, Edward Shepard, Dave Shirarz, Peter Murphy, (bottom row) Henry Hoernle, John GOlds, George Secord, Will O'Connell, Charles Hort, and Dave Wilson. Rita Boardwell's note reads: I have referred back to my notes that I made while doing reserach work to write "The history of the Napa Fire Department" from 1859 until 1963, much appeared in the Napa Regsiter's Centennial, Saturday, March 20, 1963. The Napa city Hook and Ladder No 1 (volunteers) was organized October 10, 1873, and the City of Napa purchased a Babcock Hook and Ladder Truck for their use for $950. The organization functioned until 1875 then was reorganized and the name was changed to the Napa Hook and Ladder No 1. On July 14, 1886, the last reorganization of the company took place and continued to function until the present fire department came into existence 1907. From 1886 to 1907, the Napa Hook and Ladder kept its membership to 40 men. Napa had no fire chief until 1907, and each company of volunteers selected their foremen. I have checked and the only two forement I have found were Henry Hoernle and my father Charles Harran, neither are living. My father's picture in uniform is with your collection in your office. This is the last picture taken at a reunion at Theo Gier's, Mt. La Salla, all have sinced passed on. It was taken Sunday, May 5, 1918.- Ruth Harran Bordwell". Location: O/S 2 PF#2800
