Alfred "Chief" JohnsonDate made
2006Notes
(American) Native American artist, Johnson is a painter and printmaker. Johnson was known for his technically accurate depictions of WWII aircraft. His works were frequently commissioned by aerospace contractors and military units for commemorative posters, training centers, and presentation gifts. The inclusion of “Chief” in the signature often denoted his military nickname, suggesting he was either a Chief Master Sergeant or held a similar honorary title. His prints illustrate the development of electronic warfare and World War II innovations, including illustrations of ships, U-boats, submarines, bombers, and bombs. His later works, like the watercolor paintings in the Library’s collection focused on watercolor landscapes. Johnson is a member of the Cherokee tribe. He attended Bacone College in Bacone, OK and received his bachelor of art degree from Northeastern Oklahoma State University, Tahlequah.
