Description
Caroline Harrison. Invitation envelope to Mrs. Montgomery (A), inner envelope (B), table seating arrangement diagram (C), and hand painted place card with "Mrs. Montgomery" calligraphy (D). These were saved by Mrs. Mary Ann Phelps Montgomery (1847 - 1943). The luncheon was held on December 29th, 1891, in the State Dining Room at the White House by Mrs. Caroline Harrison. There were thirty-six ladies in attendance, but Mrs. Harrison was unable to attend due to a "severe cold." A news clipping states that the place cards were imported by Mrs. McKee (Mary Harrison McKee - Caroline's daughter) from Paris. A list of thirty-five attendees is included, but Mrs. Montgomery's name is not included. Nevertheless, she had these items and even marked #11 on the seating diagram as her chair. The clippings and more info on Mrs. Montgomery can be found inside the file.
