Hand-written 3 page with title page: "History of the Lamb Wool Sole Industry From the Home of the Patent Sterling Wool Soles, Paterson, NJ " by "Geo W. Gittens Manufacturer". Four pages of notepaper written in pencil on front side. Circa date 1910-1913. “A History of the Lamb Wool Sole Industry From the Home of the Patent Sterling Wool Soles Paterson, NJ Geo. W. Gittens Manufacturer” {page 2} In the little town of Williamsburg NY situated on the 5 green barns of the East River, now the Borough of Brooklyn, NY the writers (sic) Father [commenced?] the idea that cow insoles would be a great benefit to humanity, so in 1844 just 69 years ago commenced the manufacture of what is now known as plain cork soles, and continues to make same year after year until 1865 he founded a Lamb Wool sole for which at that time was granted a patent by the U. S. [__] the first to receive same in the U. S. the writer while in his employ developed a sole which was pat (sic) in 1877. This which is now {page 3} know (sic) as a Lamb Wool Sole [___] which time a great many other makers have made and put on the market. This sole held its own until the writer received a [fee?] in 1899 for the Sterling Wool Sole which we claim is the most perfect wool sole made. Being skilled in the manuf (sic) of [___] we denied a [fee?] like a shoe made right, sturdy and durable it is complete we do not ask the consumer to do what we could not. But it is pleased in their hands complete heavy square [___] designed by [___] to do the work. After all the long years we have spent in this {page 4} business perfecting our [___] each year we trust we can say we have maintained our [___] as producers of the highest grade of goods. And we think we can be proud of our past reasons when we look back and say since 1841 the name of Gittens has been on our game for 69 years and is known in every state in the Union.
