Description

Photograph of Lady Bird Johnson speaking at a podium. Signed on the bottom right side: "For Jeffrey Rolick on a memorable day! Lady Bird Johnson". Written on the back: "NTID dedication" (The National Technical Institute for the Deaf was dedicated in 1974) "Property of Jeffrey Rolick" | "As for the answer for (1) I cannot fully tell you - I do know Lyndon helped, pushed, believed government could make [wider?] opportunities available to the handicapped. Some of the drive with him to help the deaf came from having as a close friend and neighbor someone whose mother was both deaf and mute - we were in their home regularly and saw the problems. He (Lyndon) saw the problems - his hope was to make the deaf - indeed many handicapped - more self-reliant thru learning a skill - which would open doors of confidence and achievement and happiness to them. The answer to (2) is no - (Lyndon did know a few signs! - The answer to (3) is no. Sincerely, Lady Bird Johnson".
