Top photo: Ironbound: The Mine Bucket. Also 2024.10.56(3) A mine-shaft bucket, relic of early mining days. Buckets of this type, originally 50 gallon hickory-staved whiskey or vinegar barrels, were reinforced by iron hoops and heavy strap-iron braces and fitted with a heavy iron bale. The bucket was fabricated by the mine owner or blacksmith, if he had one, at the mine and served effectively until a deepening of the shaft made necessary replacement by a larger sheet steel bucket. The one shown here had an ore capacity of about 400 lbs., all traces of these useful articles have long ago disappeared. (From caption found in envelope labeled "Notes for Happy Valley book")

Relics from Bygone Days. This mountain sheep skull was found by Donald Kemp in the boulder field above Devils Thumb Lake near the summit of the Continental Divide 9 miles west of Eldora, Colo.
