Bottom Photo: Missing Page 10 Top photo: Ironbound: The Mine Bucket. Also 2024.10.56(3) A mine-shaft bucket, relic of early mining days. Buckets of this type, originally 50 gallon hickory-staved whiskey or vinegar barrels, were reinforced by iron hoops and heavy strap-iron braces and fitted with a heavy iron bale. The bucket was fabricated by the mine owner or blacksmith, if he had one, at the mine and served effectively until a deepening of the shaft made necessary replacement by a larger sheet steel bucket. The one shown here had an ore capacity of about 400 lbs., all traces of these useful articles have long ago disappeared.
