According to Mary Flarty, J.D. "Jack" MacKenzie arrived in Nederland in 1904. After his marriage to Mrs. Mollie Thomas, he bought the Hetzer Hotel, and they operated it as the MacKenzie Hotel until it was destroyed by fire on Dec. 4, 1939. Jack also served as Nederland's mayor for many years.Collection
