The circa 1890 concentration Modoc Mill was four stories high. The uppermost story was built with hewn logs and received the ore. Gravity bins held the ore until it was fed into a crusher and the stamping apparatus below. The 18-foot-high stamping apparatus, manufactured by Griffen and Wedge of Zanesville, Ohio, consisted of 30 stamps each weighing 950 pounds that were arranged in three banks of ten. Both the mill and nearby mine, located adjacent to Duck Lake, four miles north of Ward, closed in 1920. They were placed on the National Register on Dec. 27, 1978.Collection
