John H. Kemp discovered the Happy Valley Placer which sparked the boom in Eldora in 1891. His mining claim at Sulphide, just east of Eldora, was producing at its peak in 1898. He served as the second mayor of Eldora and died on Aug. 23, 1922. Donald C. Kemp was one of his two sons.Collection
