Description

The view at the back of the Dixie Lodge at Eldora Lake, August 1938.

Context

Around 1909 Denver socialite Annie Dickinson Brown built the Dixie Lodge on Lake Eldora (near today's ski area). The west end of Beaver Lake was dammed to create another lake in front of the lodge. Annie named the lake “Kaanawha” after a river in west Virginia. Her love for the Orient dictated the architectural design of the red-roofed pagoda-style gazebos on the three arched bridges that linked the lakes. The lodge burned to the ground in 1969. Today only a chimney remains. It is on private property and can be seen when driving past Peterson Lake after leaving the ski area.
