Nathan W. Brown, Nederland's first resident, welcomed hunters and prospectors to his two-story log home in the mid-1800s. As more houses were built, the settlement was first called Brown's Crossing or Brownsville, then Middle Boulder, after the creek that swooped and gurgled through the meadow. Sam Conger stayed at Brown's Inn in the summer of 1864 and found an unidentifiable ore nearby. He left it in a barn and did not get it assayed until 1869. When he learned the value of the ore he returned to the area and staked several claims with friends. This was the start of Caribou, a rich silver camp above Brownsville, which became a stage stop, supply town, and the home for several mills.Collection
