Black Ostrich Fan

Context

Black Ostrich Fan, 1880s 14 ½ in. This stunning evening fan features black ostrich feathers, a black silk ribbon, and tortoise shell sticks. It is a fixed fan – it appears to be a folding fan, but the ostrich feathers are sewn together in a manner that fixes the sticks in an open position. The fan belonged to the mother of Mrs. Alden Coffey, who gave it to Mrs. Ladd in 1940. The Josephine West Ladd Fan Collection, Neill-Cochran House Museum. LADDF119
