Black Ostrich FanContext
Black Ostrich Fan, 1880s
14 ½ in.
This stunning evening fan features black ostrich feathers, a black silk ribbon, and
tortoise shell sticks. It is a fixed fan – it appears to be a folding fan, but the ostrich
feathers are sewn together in a manner that fixes the sticks in an open position. The
fan belonged to the mother of Mrs. Alden Coffey, who gave it to Mrs. Ladd in 1940.
