Un Bouquet FantasqueContext
Un Bouquet Fantasque, 1790-1810
9 ½ in.
This large engraved and hand-colored paper leaf with ivory stick fan was produced
in England around the turn of the 19 th century. The center of the leaf is a bouquet
produced of aspidistra leaves, and a variety of riddle texts is scattered across the
whole. The engraver notes the artifice and etiquette of fans in England during this
period through the inclusion of two hand-held fans, one open and the other closed,
with the words “to arms” printed across its edge.
