Audubon Chromolithography Orchard Oriole

Name/Title

Audubon Chromolithography "Orchard Oriole"

Context

Chromolithography of New York printmaker J. Bien after the drawing of French painter, naturalist and ornithologist John James Audubon (1785–1851). This print, entitled "Orchard Oriole", comes from a color plate book called "The Birds of America" (1827–1839) and is considered one of the finest ornithological works ever completed. The Bien Edition was a full-sized reissue by John Woodhouse Audubon (John James Audubon’s youngest son). With the advances in color printing, at the time, it was decided that the plates would be produced using the very latest techniques in chromolithography. Julius Bien of New York, a pioneer in chromolithography, was contracted as the lithographer. Due in part to the Civil War, the edition was never finished. Fewer than 100 subscriptions were sold, making this edition rarer than other early editions.
